The XII National Congress of the Italian Group of Forensic Pathology will be held in Pavia from April 17 to 19 and will focus on the theme “Forensic Autopsy Reloaded: The Legacy of the Magister in the Artificial Intelligence Era.”
The congress aims to provide an up-to-date scientific discussion on the evolution of forensic autopsy, bridging tradition, technological innovation, and applications of artificial intelligence, while highlighting the role of the master’s knowledge in contemporary medico-legal practice.
The event will bring together forensic pathologists and medical examiners cfor three days of scientific sessions, keynote lectures, case discussions, experience sharing, and social events.

For the first time since the foundation of the Italian Group of Forensic Pathology (GIPF), the Triennial National Congress will take place from 16 to 18 April 2026 at the Aula Magna of the University of Pavia, the academic home of Professor Giovanni Pierucci, founding member and Emeritus President of the GIPF.
As anticipated by the title, “Forensic Autopsy Reloaded. The Legacy of the Magister in the Artificial Intelligence Era,” the 2026 edition will be dedicated to the memory of Professor Pierucci, a magister of legal medicine and forensic pathology, who was deeply rooted in autoptic and histopathological tradition, yet at the same time endowed with a modern vision, open to innovation and technological progress.
In continuity with previous GIPF National Congresses, the scientific program will be oriented toward multidisciplinarity and the internationalization of forensic pathology. Speakers from National Scientific Societies (GeFI, GTFI, SIAPeC, SIRM) and International Societies (IALM, ECLMF, JSLM) will participate, contributing to in-depth discussion of highly topical and complex issues that require specific technical expertise and represent the present and future challenges of the discipline. To encourage participation and discussion with international colleagues, all presentations will be available in both Italian and English, with simultaneous projection of the translated slides.
The plenary session on Thursday, 16 April, will be dedicated to recommendations for good forensic practice in medicolegal autopsy. The work of the GIPF and GTFI Committees will be presented, focusing on cardiac examination in judicial autopsy settings and on post-mortem forensic toxicology laboratory analyses.
Friday, 17 April, will be entirely devoted to the multidisciplinary approach to medicolegal autopsy in minors - from neonates to adolescents - an uncommon but highly relevant field, characterized by significant complexity and social impact, often also attracting media attention. Finally, the morning of Saturday, 18 April, will focus on future developments in the discipline, namely the application of artificial intelligence in forensic pathology and related sub-disciplines such as histopathology and imaging. The aim will be to explore the potential, limitations, and risks of integrating AI technologies into complex contexts such as the interpretation of traumatic injuries, reconstruction of criminal dynamics, estimation of the post-mortem interval, and drafting of the autopsy report.
Thanks to the valuable collaboration of the Consulta Nazionale dei Giovani Medici Legali Universitari, ample space will be dedicated to Residents, PhD candidates, and young Researchers, who will have the opportunity to present their scientific work through oral communications during the Friday and Saturday sessions or through poster presentations on free topics. At the end of the Friday afternoon session, the members’ assembly will be held for the renewal of the Executive Board.
In keeping with tradition, there will be opportunities for social interaction: in addition to the welcome cocktail at the end of the Thursday session and the gala dinner on Friday evening, an event open to the public is scheduled for the evening of 16 April, entitled “From fantasy to reality: when autopsy becomes an actor”. This event will provide an opportunity to engage in dialogue with actors, directors, and film journalist on the sometimes central role of the medicolegal autopsy in cinematic storytelling, accompanied by the screening of iconic scenes from Italian and international films.

Care Colleghe e Cari Colleghi,
per la prima volta dalla fondazione del Gruppo Italiano di Patologia Forense, il Congresso Nazionale – a cadenza triennale – si svolgerà dal 16 al 18 aprile 2026 presso l’Aula Magna dell’Università degli Studi di Pavia, sede accademica del Prof. Giovanni Pierucci, socio fondatore e Presidente Emerito del GIPF.
Come anticipato dal titolo “Forensic Autopsy Reloaded. The Legacy of the Magister in the Artificial Intelligence Era”, l’edizione 2026 sarà dedicata alla memoria del Prof. Pierucci, maestro della medicina legale e patologo forense profondamente legato alla tradizione autoptica e istopatologica, ma al tempo stesso dotato di una visione moderna, aperta all’innovazione e al progresso tecnologico.
In continuità con i precedenti Congressi Nazionali GIPF, il programma sarà orientato alla multidisciplinarietà e all’internazionalizzazione della patologia forense. Interverranno relatori appartenenti a Società Scientifiche Nazionali (GeFI, GTFI, SIAPeC, SIRM) e Internazionali (IALM, ECLMF, JSLM), che contribuiranno ad approfondire temi di grande attualità e complessità, richiedenti competenze tecniche specifiche e rappresentativi delle sfide presenti e future della disciplina. Per favorire la partecipazione e la discussione con i colleghi stranieri, tutte le presentazioni saranno disponibili in doppia versione, italiana e inglese, con proiezione simultanea della traduzione.
La sessione plenaria di giovedì 16 aprile sarà dedicata alle raccomandazioni per la buona pratica forense nell’autopsia medico-legale. Saranno presentati i lavori delle Commissioni GIPF e GTFI sull’esame del cuore in ambito autoptico giudiziario e sulle analisi di laboratorio in tossicologia forense post-mortem.
La giornata di venerdì 17 aprile sarà interamente focalizzata sull’approccio multidisciplinare nell’autopsia medico-legale del minorenne – dal neonato all’adolescente – un ambito raro, ma di grande rilevanza, complessità e impatto sociale, spesso anche mediatico.
Infine, la mattina di sabato 18 aprile sarà invece dedicata agli sviluppi futuri della disciplina, ovvero all’applicazione dell’intelligenza artificiale in patologia forense e nelle sub-discipline correlate, quali l’istopatologia e l’imaging. L’obiettivo sarà esplorare potenzialità, limiti e rischi dell’integrazione delle tecnologie AI in contesti complessi come l’interpretazione delle lesioni traumatiche, la ricostruzione delle dinamiche delittuose, la stima dell’epoca della morte e la redazione del verbale autoptico.
Grazie alla preziosa collaborazione della Consulta Nazionale dei Giovani Medici Legali Universitari, ampio spazio sarà riservato a Specializzandi, Dottorandi e giovani Ricercatori, che potranno presentare i propri lavori scientifici tramite comunicazioni orali nelle sessioni di venerdì e sabato o mediante esposizione di poster a tema libero. Al termine della sessione pomeridiana di venerdì si terrà l’assemblea dei soci per il rinnovo del Consiglio Direttivo.
Come da tradizione, non mancheranno momenti di convivialità: oltre al cocktail di benvenuto al termine della sessione di giovedì e alla cena di gala del venerdì sera, è previsto per la serata del 16 aprile un evento aperto alla cittadinanza dal titolo “Dalla fantasia alla realtà: quando l’autopsia è un attore nel film”.
Sarà un’occasione per dialogare con attori, registi e critici cinematografici sul ruolo, talvolta centrale, dell’autopsia medico-legale nella narrazione cinematografica, con la proiezione di scene iconiche tratte da filmitaliani e internazionali.
Nella convinzione che i temi proposti possano stimolare una proficua condivisione e contribuire alla crescita della nostra disciplina, vi aspettiamo numerosi a Pavia per rendere omaggio all’Eredità del Maestro.
